Amoruso eBay store sold designer vintage clothing which she got from thrift stores. The first item she sold on eBay was, however, a book, which she stole. In addition, she spent her teenage year’s dumpster diving, committing petty theft and hitchhiking but soon after returned to the working world.
She took on mundane jobs for health insurance but was still broke and uninspired until she decided to start up her online eBay store “Nasty Gal Vintage”. 8 years later at age 30, she is one of the most influential, inspiring and savvy female entrepreneurs in the world!
When she started her eBay Store NGV she picked each item herself, styled everything herself, photographed everything herself using her friends as models who she paid with Hamburgers and then shipped the goods herself.
She went from making a small profit, to making a lot of money for each item she sold on eBay. This was due to the unique way she styled the clothing and her creative eye for one of a kind garments. Garments everyone wanted!
The bidding went through the roof. One example being a Chanel Jacket she bought at a Salvation Army store for $8 but sold for $1000! At the same time, she was building a huge customer base and a loyal customer base that lusted after her items. In 2007 she had 60,000 followers on My Space but she admitted she hacked into My Space to build her following. We forgive her though because her work speaks for its self.

She hired Nasty Gals first employee Christina Ferrucci, who still works for Nasty Gal today as a Buying Director. Amoruso then moved Nasty Gal off eBay and onto its own online site www.nastygal.com
In 2009, Nasty Gal moved into its first warehouse space in California. The company grew bigger and bigger and shortly afterward they moved to a 7,500 sq. ft warehouse also in California. Sophia has over-emphasized the importance of Social Media to Nasty Gal’s growth. Social Media gave her the platform she needed to expand.
By 2010, Nasty Gal moved its headquarters to Los Angeles, CA. In 2011, they reached $24 million in revenue. That’s an 11,200% three-year growth rate!
The company joined the Index Portfolio in early 2012 with a $9 million series A investment. Followed by a $40 million series B round of funding in August 2012.
2014, Business Inside named Sophia Amoruso one of the sexiest CEO’s alive.
The company has continuously grown and estimates to have a Net worth of $250 million with no debt whatsoever. Named by Forbes as ‘Fashion’s New Phenom’, Amoruso’s rising success and business savvy was compared to being up there with retail’s most profitable ventures.
